Abstract painting is about movement, color, texture, rhythm and pattern. It represents a person, thing or moment without their familiar features or outlines. It’s the impression of what someone or something feels like when form is stripped away.
Because I paint by intuition and emotion, I never know when a painting will be completed. There is no timeline because I don’t have a finished image in mind. What I have or what inspires me is a feeling or an idea of what I want to express. The finished painting is as much a surprise to me as anyone else.
For my current pieces, I’ve gathered three masterworks for inspiration:
Apollo and Phaethon by Tiepolo; Van Gogh’s The Sower and a Hiroshige block print.
I chose these pieces because of the colors, quick brush strokes, heavy impasto technique, as well as lighting, mood and movement. I am using three different size canvases which adds variety for me as well as limitations.
